Makris sends Anorthosis top
Andreas Makris late goal gives Anorthosis a vital 2-1 victory over Doxa on Monday night to send the ‘old lady’ top of the league.
In a game in which the home team was in total control of the game and created the majority of the chances no one was able to break the deadlock before halftime and both teams were at stalemate.
However it was a totally different game in the second half when Doxa got their noses in front in the 52nd minute and against the run of play when Carlitos left foot low drive was enough to send the ball past Anorthosis goalkeeper Jan Koprivec and open the score.
Anorthosis immediately got back to level-terms 5 minutes after when Markus Holgersson got on the end of a Andreas Makris corner and slot the ball past Doxa keeper Alexander Negri to make the score 1-1.
Andre Paus piled on the pressure as the clock ticked away, missing opportunity after opportunity to get the all important 2 goal bringing signs of frustration and anxiety amongst the home fans that were at the Antonis Papadopoulos Stadium to watch the game.
The second goal eventually did come for Anorthosis 12 minutes before the 90’ when Andreas Makris was one on one with Alexander Negri and the Cypriot International did not miss from close range and stroke the ball into the back of the net to make the final score 2-1.
In his post match press conference Anorthosi manager Andre Paus was clearly pleased with the result however not with the performance he said: “ We are happy with the three points but not with our performance, we have shown some signs of improvement in defence in comparison to other games but we still a lot of work to do in order to be where we have to be. We made some mistakes in which we paid for when we conceded the goal but the changes we made going forward brought us the two goals which eventually bought us the win. We have to thank our fans and let them know that we will need there support this season”.
