Koutsokoumnis rejects quit calls for wearing Turkey kit
Cyprus Football Association boss Costakis Koutsokoumnis has deleted his statement on Facebook criticising the uproar caused after he was pictured wearing a Turkey football kit.
Koutsokoumnis published a lengthy statement on Monday expressing his justification for wearing the shirt in a friendly football match that took place in Istanbul.
Some of the island’s top football clubs, including APOEL and Anorthosis, called for Koutsokoumnis’ resignation following the news.
On Tuesday Koutsokoumnis announced that he would not step down.
The Republic of Cyprus has been divided since 1974 when Turkey invaded and occupied 37 per cent of its territory. UN backed talks resumed in May 2015 aiming to reunite the island under a federal roof.
