Salamina defeat unbeaten AEK (VIDEO)
Former AEK player Koullis Pavlou scored in Nea Salamina’s big 2-1 win over league leaders AEK Larnaca in the GSZ Stadium in Larnaca on Monday evening.
In a game that had absolutely everything, Nea Salamina managed to pick their biggest victory in the league so far over an unbeaten AEK team who had no choice not to just remain unbeaten but to pick up all three points and join hands with APOEL at the top of the table.
AEK started the game in an aggressive manner, applying immense pressure to the visitors, however it was Nea Salamina who stunned the home crowd when Makriev was brought down in the penalty area by Tonio and the Bulgarian striker converted successfully to give Salamina the lead on the half-hour mark.
Aldo Adorno almost gave Salamina a two goal cushion but his wicked free kick scraped the post and went over for a goal kick.
AEK got the equalising goal on the stroke of half-time when Juan Tomas got on the end of a David Catala cross and sliced the ball into the bottom left hand corner of the goal to bring the score level at the break.
Former AEK player Koullis Pavlou hurt his previous team when he regained the lead for Nea Salamina six minutes into the second half, in what would eventually be the winning goal of the game.
Despite the home team's desperate attempts to break their opponents down the final score remained 1-2 and AEK have lost for the first time since August when they were defeated against Bordeaux for the Europa League.
With their win, Nea Salamina climb to fourth in the league.
