Kasoulides signs CoE terrorism prevention protocol
Cyprus’ Foreign Affairs Minister Ioannis Kasoulides has signed an Additional Protocol of the Council of Europe’s Convention on the Prevention of Terrorism on Monday.
According to CNA, the signing was conducted in the presences of Council of Europe Secretary General Thorbjorn Jagland.
The Protocol aims at preventing and limiting the flows of “foreign terrorist fighters” to countries such as Syria and Iraq, by criminalising participation in a terrorist group or travelling abroad for the purpose of terrorism, as well as training, organising or funding travel for that purpose.
The treaty has been signed by 29 countries so far and ratified by 6 others.
According to the UN’s estimations in April 2015, over 25 000 foreigners worldwide have joined the ranks of the Islamic State or Al-Qaeda.
