Nicosia roads become rivers, police issue flooding warnings

Nicosia has been hit by heavy rain and hail, causing widespread flooding in many areas across the city, SigmaLive has learnt on Thursday.
Specifically, SigmaLive readers have sent video footage from Kokkinotrimithia where heavy hail has caused police to issue a warning on the road in the area.
Police have warned drivers to use caution due to heavy rainfall and hail, which is limiting visibility.
Ayios Georgios avenue in Lakatameia has flooded the island’s fire services told SigmaLive.
SigmaLive was told that approximately half a metre of water has gathered in the road, causing difficulties for traffic.
The Fire Services have said that they have received approximately six calls to aid vehicles stuck in the road and flooding in homes.
Images taken by SigmaLive show a heavy back-up of traffic in the Strovolos area.
Video footage has shown heavy flooding on Tseriou Avenue in Nicosia, with an anonymous SigmaLive reader describing that the road has been turned into a “river”.
The meteorological service has reported that isolated storms are expected in Nicosia, due to a low pressure system in the area.
Snow and sleet are expected to fall in Troodos, the meteorological service added.
Temperatures are expected to fall to seven degrees C inland, nine degrees C on the coast, and two degrees C in the mountains.
Isolated storms are also expected on Friday.
