Bus crash at Anthoupoli roundabout: 1 dead, 16 injured
A public bus crashed this afternoon at a roundabout in Nicosia, leaving the bus driver dead and another 16 injured, sources present at the scene of the incident reported.
The bus is reported to have crossed against the flow of traffic just after 2 pm at the Nicosia-Anthoupoli roundabout, crashing into five cars before being halted by a traffic barrier.
Initial information revealed that the bus was en route from Nicosia to Anthoupoli.
The bus driver, who died, is 60-year-old Sofronis Mylonas. Investigations are underway to discover the cause of both the crash and the driver's death, a police announcement has revealed.
Ambulances arrived on the scene immediately to care for those injured in the incident. Sigma's sources have said that the a number of the injured were taken to Nicosia General, while others were transported to private clinics.
Authorities are still investigating the cause of the crash.
In the meantime, Cyprus’ Blood Bank and its local office in Engomi have called for donors to come forward as the injured could be in need of blood. Blood donors have been asked to contact the Bank of the Engomi office at 22 809 052, 22 809 048.
