Pavlopoulos talks Greece-Turkey relations with Erdogan

President Prokopis Pavlopoulos spoke with the Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan on Thursday evening at the border checkpoint on the bridge into Turkey in Kipi, Evros.

He crossed to the middle of the bridge to exchange wishes with Turkish soldiers, local officials and officers. The president also spoke with Erdogan on the telephone.

Sources said that Pavlopoulos sent a message of friendship and peaceful coexistence between Greece and Turkey. Erdogan invited Pavlopoulos to visit Ankara.  The President of Greece called for progress in issues between the two countries in accordance with international law, so that he might accept the Turkish President’s invitation  

The Greek President visited the guard post on the Greek side, exchanging Easter wishes with the soldiers and officers stationed there.

Addressing soldiers at the border crossing, he emphasised that the Greek borders were also those of the European Union, adding that "we are aware of our obligations, the obligation of European institutions but also Greek institutions, concerning what we must do for you.”

Pavlopoulos also addressed the issue illegal migration and the efforts being made to help protect the borders in accordance with the EU law.

The president is expected to wrap up his tour of the region by visiting the island of Limnos and troops stationed there.
