Respect international law for energy relationship
Stelios Himonas, permanent secretary of the Ministry of Energy, sent a clear message, at the informal meeting between energy ministers in Latvia, that the basis of a well-functioning relationship when it comes to energy topics, is respect of international law and the sovereignty of all countries.
He also added Cyprus’ support in the Euro-Mediterranean Partnership that can strengthen cooperation in the fields of energy infrastructure and energy security, as well as, the achievement of European objectives on climate change and energy in the country.
Himonas said that the largest block for Cyprus, for a well-functioning relationship, is the lack of connections with European energy nets. He asked for the EU to actively support, both legally and financially, the countries that are isolated when it comes to energy issues.
He added that when it comes to renewable energy source that the countries should take into account biodiversity so as to not harm it.
Himonas also said that efficient systems for decision-making need to be in place, with clear rules, so that delay and excessive spending can be avoided, when it comes to renewable energy issues.
