Parellis qualifies for Rio Olympics with record discus throw

The Cyprus Olympic Committee has congratulated discus thrower Apostolos Parellis after he qualified to participate at the 2016 Rio Olympics this summer.

Parellis threw 65.69 metres at the Herakleia 2016 event which took place in Crete on Sunday, breaking his own Cypriot record (65.36m) in the process.

His 65.69m throw is recorded as the 13th best throw in the world this year at present.

A minimum distance of 65 metres is required in order to qualify for the Olympics.

Parellis’ qualification means he is now the 10th Cyprus athlete to have qualified for this summer’s Olympic Games.

In Crete, Parellis threw 63.16m, 65.69m, 64.35m, 64.75m, and two invalid attempts.
