Christiansen on AEL loss: “I don’t have an explanation”
APOEL boss Thomas Christiansen said his side “didn’t play at the level they could” and “I don’t have an explanation” after Saturday’s 1-0 loss to AEL Limassol at Tsirion Stadium.
The game’s solitary strike came after Spanish centre-back Inaki Astiz was judged to have pulled countryman Mikel Arruabarrena to the ground inside the box five minutes from time. The AEL striker sent Boy Waterman the wrong way to send the home fans into raptures.
The defeat represents Christiansen’s first domestic loss since taking over the club this summer.
“I feel sad about the result and our performance. We were not assertive,” said the Thrylos boss.
“We must use this game as a lesson to improve. I apologise to our fans. It was among the uglier games from my team."
Omonia (fourth on 21 points) host table toppers AEK Larnaca on Sunday at GSP Stadium.
With a win John Carver’s side can go level on points with AEL, while Imanol Idiakez’s troops can extend their lead at the top to five points if they come away victorious.
