APOEL and Anorthosis play out fitting season finale
APOEL and Anorthosis Famagusta played out a fitting finale to the Protathlima CYTA 2015-16 season in what was an emotional night for both clubs.
On the pitch the score finished 2-2 in what was an extremely entertaining match. Pieros Sotiriou initially put the champions ahead in the 12th minute but on-loan PAOK striker Efthymis Koulouris levelled matters just before the break.
Thrylos took the lead again through Tomas De Vincenti with 56 minutes on the clock, seven minutes later the Old Lady equalled the score via Andreas Makris.
Most fans in the packed GSP Stadium were only looking forward to one thing, despite the thrilling game on show, which was to witness their side lift the Protathlima CYTA trophy for the fourth consecutive season.
Despite the celebrations and joy there were also tears as the Nicosia giants bid farewell to long-time captain Constantinos Charalambides who will now see out his distinguished career elsewhere.
Rumours are starting to circulate that the number 10 will move to league runners-up AEK Larnaca as he looks for more first-team football.
Former goalkeeper Dionisis Chiotis was also honoured. The Greek shot stopper played over 100 league games for the club and told fans that he was glad he had the chance to properly say ‘goodbye’ after being unable to do so last season.
APOEL’s opponents on the night also saw the career of one of their long-time stalwarts come to an end. Captain Christos Marangos played more than 100 league games for the club over four separate spells as despite moving on to other clubs in-between he was always drawn back to the club.
