APOEL give Cavenaghi emotional send-off before Apollon clash
APOEL gave fan favourite Fernando Cavenaghi an emotional send-off on Wednesday as the Argentine bids farewell to the club after mutually agreeing to terminate his contract earlier this week.
The APOEL number 79 announced his recovery from knee surgery will take eight months to complete, shortly after that announcement both parties agreeing it would be best to part ways as he aims to recover as quickly as possible.
On Wednesday APOEL faced Apollon Limassol in the Cyprus Cup with both sides drawing 1-1 at GSP Stadium.
Before kick-off APOEL officials organised a fitting send-off for the former River Plate star with a video montage of his achievements at the club displayed on the big screen and a signed APOEL shirt bearing his name from teammates presented to him.
Apollon also gave their own gift in a sign of respect for arguably the island’s best soccer player.
Cavenaghi scored 19 goals in 18 league appearances and a further four goals in Cyprus Cup and Europa League qualifying games.
