Cavenaghi parts ways with APOEL after eight-month injury

Fernando Cavenaghi and APOEL have parted company after the former Argentina international revealed his recovery from knee surgery will take eight months to complete.
His original contract with the Protathlima CYTA leaders was due to end at the end of next season but both sides decided to mutually terminate the deal.
“The player's decision to proceed directly with a knee operation and the fact that the recovery time will be excessive and that he would not be available for at least eight months, unfortunately brings us to the joint decision for both sides to end their cooperation,” read an APOEL statement.
“Fernando Cavenaghi is a great football personality in world football and the cooperation between us was priceless for our team.”
Cavenaghi expressed his “gratitude” to all associated with APOEL following the announcement.
“I had a wonderful time here,” said the four-time Argentina international.
“It was an amazing experience to play for this team. Here I did what I love most which is to play football and score goals. I hope everyone enjoys it here as much as I enjoyed myself,” added the former River Plate star.
“APOEL have to finish the season where they deserve – winning the league and cup. I am very proud to be part of APOEL's history. Thank you all.”
Cavenaghi had been a revelation since arriving to Nicosia as he netted 19 goals in 18 league appearances.
