Omonia's Blati Toure impressive, despite AFCON heartache
Omonia might have a fight on their hands to keep Blati Toure within their ranks beyond this season, following the Burkina Faso star’s exploits at the 2017 Africa Cup of Nations.
Toure’s unfancied ‘Stallions’ made it all the way to the semi-final but lost to Egypt after a heart-breaking penalty shootout loss.
Toure came close to breaking the deadlock during normal time, but was thwarted by an inspiring performance from ‘The Pharaohs’ 44-year-old goalkeeper Essam El Hadary.
152-capped El Hadary flapped to save from Toure after six minutes just inside the area. Toure's lofted shot was goal-bound until El Hadary redeemed himself, clawing the ball away to his right.
Toure almost added another after he capitalised from a poor El Hadary clearance, only to see his effort cleared off the line.
Burkina Faso were eventually eliminated when Ajax’s on-loan Chelsea star Bertrand Traore saw his spot-kick saved by the ‘evergreen’ keeper.
Traore’s miss allowed Egypt to win 4-3 on penalties with Cameroon or Ghana being their final opponents.
