Apollon and Omonia kick-off Protathlima CYTA with wins

Apollon Limassol and Omonia kicked off the 2016-17 Protathlima CYTA season with convincing wins over Nea Salamina and Ermis Aradippou respectively on Saturday.
Omonia’s clash with Ermis was the earlier kick-off at Nicosia’s GSP Stadium in what was ex-Newcastle United boss John Carver’s first domestic match since taking over during the summer.
The Greens took the lead via a two-minute penalty from former Olympiacos forward Matt Derbyshire, another Englishman making his Cypriot league football debut.
12 minutes later Israeli attacking midfielder Amir Agayev grabbed his first goal before Ermis halved the deficit via a strike from Ibson six minutes after going down 2-0.
Agayev put the match to bed six minutes from time.
Apollon Limassol faced few difficulties in seeing off Nea Salamina away at Ammochostos Stadium.
Goals from Abraham Gneki Guie (6), Joao Pedro (7) and Alex da Silva (90+2) completed a resounding win.
Protathlima CYTA action continues on Sunday with newcomers AEZ Zakakiou at home to Ethnikos Achna (6pm) and Anagennisi Deryneia facing a touch trip to AEL Limassol (8pm).
