Apollon and Omonia set for Cyprus Cup final showdown
Apollon Limassol and Omonia Nicosia will both face each other in the Cyprus Cup final after both sides overcame APOEL and AEK respectively via penalties on Wednesday night.
A stunning free-kick from Alex da Silva on 45 minutes put the Limassol giants ahead.
Their lead was short-lived, however, as Giorgos Efrem levels matters barely a minute later. Nuno Morais finding the Cypriot winger from deep who took a touch and then volleyed past the helpless Bruno Vale.
Deep into stoppage time APOEL centre-midfielder Vinicius saw a straight red for what appeared to be a stamp on Esteban Sachetti.
The scores remained level at 2-2 on aggregate as both sides had to settle for a nail-biting penalty shootout. APOEL’s Spanish centre-back Inaki Astiz missing his spot kick allowing Dejan Mezga to be the hero for the home side.
Omonia will face the Limassol side in the final as they to overcame a penalty shootout against AEK. The Greens going through 5-3 on penalties.
