AEK go 4 points clear after difficult win over Aris
AEK Larnaca have extended their lead at the top of the Cyprus Championship to 4 points after defeating Aris Limassol in difficult fashion 2-1 at the GSZ Stadium.
It was the perfect start to 2016 for the league leaders AEK Larnaca after fully capitalising on Anorthosis home draw to Omonia, Tomas Christiansen’s side earn a hard fought three points against an Aris Limassol side who have proven this season that they will fight until the very end for points and that no team should feel complacent.
AEK’s top goalscorer in the league Andre Alves netted his 11th goal of the season with a beautifully timed finish to beat goalkeeper Nuredinovski and give his team the lead ten minutes into the second half, Juan Manuel Ortiz was credited with the assist.
Aris responded instantly and beautifully when Iban Randy unleashed a ferocious shot from outside the area beating everyone in site AEK goalkeeper Toño couldn't do absolutely anything to prevent Randy from scoring one of the goals of the season so far and the score was level.
Tomas Christiansen ordered his players to press higher up the pitch and try to break through the visitors well organised defense who at that point were dealing extremely with AEK’s attacking onslaught.
Eventually the league leaders did get the second goal and it was through Spaniard winger Tete who cross into the area was misjudged by Aris goalkeeper Nuredinovski and the ball went over the line to give Tete his first goal for his club and AEK a crucial lead.
Despite having the lead AEK continued to press and control the game in order to score a third however it was not to be. AEK’s win has took the team from Larnaca up to 42 points with Anorthosis remaining in second with 38 points.
Next up for AEK is a trip to Paralimni to face Enosis at the Tasos Markou Stadium. For Aris Limassol who should have another difficult game in front of them at home to champions APOEL.
