Champions League: APOEL through to next round after TNS win
APOEL advanced to the third UEFA Champions League qualifying round after a comfortable 3-0 win at home to Welsh champions The New Saints on Tuesday.
Goals from Cyprus internationals Nektarios Alexandrou and Pieros Sotiriou did the damage for TNS, who held APOEL to a surprise goalless draw in their first-leg clash.
Argentine playmaker Tomas De Vincenti added the third via the penalty spot for the Cypriot champions in injury time.
"I am immensely proud," New Saints boss Craig Harrison was quoted as saying by BBC Sport.
"The second goal made it a huge ask and took the wind out of our sails.
"We had our chances, but that is me being ultra-critical."
Sotiriou then doubled Thomas Christiansen’s side advantage when he was given too much space with 20 minutes remaining, swivelling and firing home from close range to end any hopes of a comeback.
De Vincenti added the third and final goal with an injury-time penalty.
APOEL will face either Rosenborg or IFK Norrkoping in the third qualifying round as they bid to reach the group stages for the fourth time.
The Norwegian side are currently 3-1 up over their Swedish opponents after the first leg and are set to conclude the tie later today.
