Turkey holds the key for the opening of 3 main check points
The key for the opening of the barricades, indicated as a matter of priority for the Republic of Cyprus, relies on Ankara.
According to “Simerini” newspaper, the President of the Republic, Nicos Anastasiades, stated on the sidelines of yesterday’s meeting with the mayors of semi occupied municipalities that the opening of the three main roadblocks of Pyrgos, Pyroi and Derhynia, also requires Turkey’s agreement, as the Turkish Cypriot side argues that the three aforementioned areas fall in first-degree military zones.
President Anastasiades, however, did not exclude an announcement related to the opening of some barricades until Wednesday, referring to the issues that will be put under discussion during today’s private meeting with the Greek Cypriot negotiator, Andreas Mavroyiannis.
The President categorically said that "the Greek Cypriot side would never agree to open up another roadblock after the demands of the Turkish Cypriot side when Nicosia’s demands for other barricades do not fulfil, on the pretext of the raising of security and military zones’ issues ".
Anastasiades obviously referred to the request for the opening of Lefka-Apliki checkpoint, which is a long-standing demand of the Turkish Cypriot side.
