Prokopis Pavlopoulos will pay an official visit to Cyprus
The President of the Hellenic Republic Mr Prokopis Pavlopoulos will pay an official two-day visit to Cyprus on 30-31 March. It is the first official visit to the country for Mr. Pavlopoulos since his election on February 18th.
President Pavlopoulos, who arrives in Cyprus on the morning of March 30th, will be welcomed by the President of the Republic Nicos Anastasiades, at the Presidential Palace. It is expected that Mr. Pavlopoulos will be thoroughly informed about the latest developments in Cyprus, whereas there is information about the recommencement of the negotiations after the elections taking place in the occupied part of the island. The President will be accompanied by the Foreign Minister, Nikos Kotzias.
After a private meeting, the two presidents will enter into substantive discussions, particularly about the relations between Greece and Cyprus.
During his stay in Cyprus, President Pavlopoulos will address a special plenum session of the House of Representatives and he is going to meet among others the Archbishop of Cyprus and the President of the House of Representatives.
President Pavlopoulos: “The more difficulties Cyprus and Greece face, the stronger relations become”
Pavlopoulos said he felt at home in Cyprus and said the more difficulties the two countries face, the more their relations become stronger. Furthermore, he stressed that the two countries shared common concerns both in the political and economic arena.
Anastasiades: “Strong bonds between Greece and Cyprus that dated back to ancient times”
The Cypriot President also expressed the certainty that the Greek President`s visit would reconfirm the genuine interest of Greece in the people of Cyprus.
After their meeting, the two presidents presided over consultations between the delegations of the two countries. They are expected to make statements to the press shortly.
Later on Monday, Pavlopoulos will meet Archbishop Chrysostomos II and House President Yiannakis Omirou. In the afternoon he will address the plenary of the House and will also have meetings with parliamentary parties. In the evening, the Greek President will attend a formal dinner hosted by Anastasiades at the presidential palace.
On Tuesday, Pavlopoulos will visit the Green Line. He will be accompanied by Nicosia Mayor Constantinos Yiorkadjis. Before departing, he will visit the Greek contingent camp in Malounda, based in Cyprus in line with the provisions of the 1960 Constitution which established the Republic of Cyprus.
Honorary decorations and gifts with a great symbolic value were exchanged between the two presidents. President Anastasiades has characteristically sated that the gifts are actually a part of our soul. More specifically, President Anastasiades has awarded to President Pavlopoulos the Grand Collar of the Order of Archbishop Makarios the 3rd. On his part, Mr. Pavlopoulos offered Mr. Anastasiades an ancient crater depicting Europa’s Abduction.
