Cyprus could become part of CERN
Director of the CERN research centre, Rolf Heuer, and Deputy head of International Relations, Emmanouel Tsesmelis visited Cyprus on 5-6 July, as per the invitation of President Nicos Anastasiades.
The Ministry of Education notes that Rolf and Tsesmelis accompanied by Minister of Education Costas Kadis were received by President Anastasiades with whom they discussed the benefits of Cyprus becoming an associate member of CERN, as well as the prospects arising from a possible full membership.
On 5 October 2012 Cyprus singed an association agreement with CERN. The agreement must be ratified by the Parliament before coming into force.
During his stay in Cyprus, Heuer also met with the Finance Ministry`s Permanent Secretary Christos Patsalides and the Costas Papanicolas, President of the Cyprus Institute.
The Ministry of Education Permanent Secretary briefed Heuer on the ratification process that would constitute Cyprus as a CERN associate member, expressing hope that Cyprus will soon be in position to take a final decision on the issue.
