Greek police arrest 10 people for trafficking refugees
Greek police arrested 10 people in Lesvos on Thursday for supplying forged travel documents to refugees and migrants who had arrived on several Greek islands from Turkey, and then transporting them to mainland Greece.
In a large operation conducted jointly with the organised crime unit, and after receiving information from the country’s anti-terror unit and the National Intelligence Service, police raided two apartments in the town of Mytilene.
Authorities believe the suspects received large fees to provide migrants who had not yet been registered by police with forged documents and to then transport hundreds daily to the mainland.
The suspects are all foreign nationals and police believe the criminal ring had contacts in other parts of the country where it sent forget documents.
